Dear Mr. President,
May I call you Joe. You may recall that I am a Delawarean almost exactly one year older than you. We were playing football with each other in high school. I have pretty much known you or of you all your life.
I will be honest. There have been times when I envied you. I also was attracted to government service and even considered running for office as you did. Eventually I served in the Foreign Service in Europe and then was Counselor to the Secretary of Commerce in the Reagan administration. You may remember that you were a died in the wool free trader and I was concerned about losing American industrial leadership to Japan. I then became a leader of the first U.S. trade mission to China and that only reinforced my concerns.
I was amazed in 1988 when you actually thought someone from a small state like Delaware could be elected President, but eventually you showed me how it could be done in 2020 after several false moves and some luck on your part with Obama.
I have agreed with much that you have done over the past four years and especially with your much more realistic approach to China, competitiveness, and industrial policy than those of your predecessors Clinton, Obama, and even Trump.
So, I am not telling you that you have been a bad President. But what I am telling you is that times have changed and you have not. You have been devoted to Israel all your political life. Israel is not devoted to you. It is now ruining you and the United States and turning us all into masters of genocide.
Netanyahu is making a monkey of you. Israel under Netanyahu is bent on
so far, so good, I agree. Because I was a reader of Bill Greider and Kevin Phillips as well as Clyde, he knows of their reservations about industrial powers who went all in on finance and that free trade always worked out better for everyone. We've heard so little about "the conversion" in the US from the early Joe Biden and Paul Krugman view and the general public even less: when exactly did it dawn on the economic and FP establishment that the country "breaking and entering" into all their highes electronic military and industrial files was going to be a rival not an ally, much l ess convert to democracy and a multi-party system? By the way readers, I have made my own call for Biden to step down here at substack: https://williamrneil.substack.com/p/the-debate-debacle-democracys-despairbiden and did an hour long interview with MoCo attorney Hal Ginsberg on YouTube last Friday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJqxIVUF4Zs&t=3174s Both the essay and the inteview have held up well in light of the fact that Biden is "digging in," saying only divine intervention can get him to drop out. It's all still in play but every serious voice, like Clyde's, will help get us a better candidated to beat the threat of the tyrant Trump
